About St. Mark

A Lutheran church in the northwoods since 1950.

Organized on the last day of 1950. Still on Baird Avenue. Still confessing Christ crucified and risen.

Who we are

St. Mark Lutheran Church is a congregation of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod, in the North Wisconsin District, Eagle River Circuit. We are the church behind the courthouse — a parish of 179 baptized members and 135 confirmed, gathering about 96 souls on a typical week.

We are not a program church. We are a place where the Word is preached, sinners are forgiven, children are baptized, the dying are visited, and the hungry — in Rhinelander and far beyond — are not forgotten.

What we believe

Scripture alone

The Bible is the inspired Word of God and the only rule and norm of faith and life.

Grace alone, faith alone

We are justified freely, for Christ’s sake, through faith — not by our works, feelings, or decisions.

Christ for you

In water, Word, bread, and wine, Jesus actually gives what He promises: forgiveness, life, and salvation.

We subscribe to the Lutheran Confessions collected in the Book of Concord of 1580 because they are a true exposition of Holy Scripture. Read more at the LCMS and the North Wisconsin District.

Pastor

Rev. Richard C. Miller

Pastor Miller has shepherded this congregation through ordinary Sundays and hard ones. He and Sally mark their anniversary each December. He is glad to visit, to baptize, to bury, and to sit with a question that does not have a neat answer.

Vicar

Andy Wyss

Andy is in the Specific Ministry Pastor program at Concordia Seminary, St. Louis — studying while he serves here, with Jayme and their family. Year one is complete. The congregation is helping raise up the next pastor the northwoods will need.
